Indianapolis Cultural Trail - Trail Talk

Connectivity

Connectivity was one of the key issues driving the conceptualization of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick. The Cultural Trail links all five downtown Cultural Districts (and connects to the sixth district in Broad Ripple via the Monon Trail). It is also the downtown hub for the Greenway System and it connects to Indianapolis' Bike Lanes. In this issue of Trail Talk, we want to be sure you know how to be connected…by bike!

As we wind up the construction phases of the trail, we look forward to creating more resources that help trail users connect using alernative modes of transportation. Stay tuned!

Bike 'n Bus

Traveling by bike and bus is a great way to stay in shape, save money and improve our city's air quality.

Every IndyGo bus has a two-unit bike rack and use is free with your bus fare. However, please note bike racks are available on a first come, first served basis.

To learn how to load and unload your bike on an IndyGo bus, visit the Bike 'n Bus page of IndyGo's website here. From this page you can also access IndyGo's quick trip planner. Or visit IndyGo's home page at http://www.indygo.net/.

More Bike Racks!

And now a way to stay connected to your bike... More secure bike racks!

In response to the heavier than expected bike parking needs along the Trail, we are working to get additional bike racks. The Cultural Trail has ordered additional bike racks to be placed along Washington Street, but they will not be in place until later this summer.

Park Indy, LLC, who operates the parking meter system, has purchased 50 ring racks that attach to parking meter posts (see image on the left). Indy Cog and the City of Indianapolis’ Office of Sustainability were instrumental in negotiating with Park Indy to get these additional racks. These bike racks are secure and are free to use. They have already begun appearing downtown.

The owner of 2 North Meridian Street has added new bike racks at two locations just north of the Cultural Trail along Meridian Street. If you are stopping in at Penn Station or Rock Bottom look for these. The Conrad has also added a bike rack on Washington Street for those who are visiting the hotel, spa, Tastings, or Capitol Grill.

When we are finished with construction, there will be Cultural Trail bike racks on Washington Street near the Indiana Government Center, the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Embassy Suites, Red’s Barber Shop, the offices of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Pita Pit, the City Park garage, and the City-County Building.

Get out there and ride!

Indy Crit on July 14, 2012

Mark your calendars! The third annual Indy Criterium Cycling Race & Festival, Powered By Team Nebo Ridge will start at University Park, 325 N. Meridian St., on July 14. Racers will follow the Dreyer & Reinbold Mini Cooper pace car through an exciting 1-mile figure-8 course looping around the park and onto the famous Monument Circle bricks.

But you don't have to be a racer to enjoy the action.  There will be family fun activities throughout the day including Kids' Races and helmet fittings by IU Health. The Indy Criterium Race & Festival is truly a celebration of cycling in the community.

They have embraced the Cultural Trail by setting up 3-7 mile long rides for the entire family.  All proceeds from the race benefit Freewheelin’ Community Bikes, which helps underserved youths earn bicycles of their own.

You can register for the race by clicking here.

Be part of the action by volunteering. Learn more here.

A Great Urban Weekend Escape

Larry Olmsted, a contributor to Forbes Magazine, writes that Indianapolis is at the top of his list of great urban weekend escapes. Olmsted was so impressed with Indy's job with Super Bowl 46 that he decided to write a follow-up article about Indy focusing on many of the city's stellar attractions, including the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
