Support Fountain Square Businesses
The Indianapolis Cultural Trail will provide greater connectivity to the Fountain Square Cultural District from the downtown core. But the business in this area rely on local support to remain in business.
While we’re in construction in the Fountain Square area we ask that you please make a special effort to support the many independent businesses in this area.
Look for green “P” parking signs to direct you to adjacent, and usually FREE parking. Parking along Virginia Avenue in this area is limited due to construction but there is still plenty of parking and access to these great businesses.

"E Pluribus Unum" by Fred Wilson: An Update
On July, 29, 2011, the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) announced the change of location of the proposed E Pluribus Unum, a public art project for the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick.
The artwork, which would recreate a figure currently found on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, was originally to be located on the front plaza of the City-County Building in conjunction with a nearby section of the Cultural Trail.
Fred Wilson, the artist who proposed E Pluribus Unum, is internationally recognized for his work “repurposing” icons and artifacts in order to create new perspectives and meanings, and to help people see those artifacts in a different way, as he intends to do with E Pluribus Unum. His artwork was commissioned following recommendations made by the Cultural Trail Curatorial Advisory Committee, which was comprised of local curators of contemporary art, local artists, and relevant design professionals.
A series of community meetings, developed in conjunction with the Race and Cultural Relations Leadership network, a committee of the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, has been in the planning stages, and dates will be announced soon. Those interested in attending the meetings to discuss the project may find a schedule, along with more information about the project, at www.FredWilsonIndy.org, or by calling 317.631.6542, ext. 173.
Stay tuned for more details, and don’t forget to let us know what you think about the proposed artwork by leaving your comments at www.FredWilsonIndy.org.
Construction Update
The Cultural Trail on Capitol Ave. and Alabama St. is now complete!
SOUTHEAST CORRIDOR (Virginia Ave.):
--Virginia from Penn to Delaware: Underground work is on-going in preparation for the construction of the trail in this area. Paver work will begin at the corner of Penn & Washington.
--Virginia under the garage and CSX: There is milling and resurfacing being done as well as the construction of a new traffic island at the entrance to this area. Concrete work is being completed in preparation for the "Swarm Street" project by Acconci Studio. Click here for information about this ambitious public art project.
NOTE: There are traffic restrictions in this area. Virginia Ave from Penn to Alabama is open to north bound traffic only.
--Virginia from CSX to New Jersey: Stone and concrete paver base have been going in and work on the corner plazas will continue. Paver work will begin in this area.
--South Street: Placement of underground drainage structures continues.
--Virginia from East to the Interstate: This area will be built. However, we will not begin demolition until the areas to the north and south, which are currently under construction, are substantially complete.
--Virginia from the Interstate to Prospect: Work in this area has been delayed due to the discovery of vaults and a trolley track that runs from East to Prospect streets. Plans to deal with these unexpected conflicts are being worked on. Grading and stone work followed by curb placement and concrete paver base placement should begin by the end of the month.
CENTRAL CORRIDOR (Washington St.):
--Alabama to Meridian: Construction of trench drains and under-drains, sidewalks, & plazas should occur this month.
--Meridian to Illinois: The trail is complete in front of the Conrad Hotel. The eastern portion of the block to Meridian should have concrete by mid-month. The ADA ramps at Illinois & Meridian on the South side of Washington should be constructed this month.
--Illinois to Capitol: Utility work is on-going.
WEST CORRIDOR (Blackford St.):
--Indiana Ave. to New York St.: Pavers are being installed.
--Military Park: Work in this area is on-going and will last through the end of August approximately.
NOTE: Please bi-pass this section of Blackford this month. Use Blake St. off of New York St. to access Ohio St.
